EM (Emily Meehan) is an independent, multi-disciplinary artist and designer based in Santa Cruz, California. Her extensive background in board sports & dance informs much of her exploration in the mediums of illustration, design, fashion, film & performance.

Blending traditional with digital rendering techniques, EM’s color-forward world comes to life and can be described as: psychedelic luminous nature meets retro-futuristic femme culture.

EM’s work centers around a theme of contrast; the space between chaos and control, the masculine and feminine, the ancient and the futuristic, the mundane and the magical.

Much of EM’s visual work is subtly autobiographical and derived from her own life and times. Whether painting large-scale murals, crafting wearable art, or directing metaphorical films, she sees her role as a conduit: transforming personal experiences into vibrantly colored invitations for her audience to connect to self and other.

“The ‘Pile’ is not a rotisserie chicken nor a frog, but a loose depiction of my soul/spirit. The Pile mirrors my life & times. It was founded in 2009 in college at UCSC through various games of “Exquisite Corpse” and I’ve been creating it in various forms ever since. This little plump, neckless androgynous critter allows me to express myself and play with all sorts of new mediums. The Pile serves many functions in my life including but not limited to: helping me navigate life challenges, increasing my spiritual connection, exploring femininity, activity, rest, and everything in between. Sometimes balanced, sometimes degenerate, the Pile is a vehicle with which I can move my inner experiences to external visual language which I hope resonates with others.”
